By Grigor Hakobyan

Background:

The February 19 Presidential elections in Armenia resulted in the defeat of the main opposition candidate, Levon Ter-Petrosyan and the victory of the former Prime Minister of Armenia and now current President of Armenia Serj Sargsyan. However, unsanctioned opposition rallies that were held since late 2007 continued unabated in the capitol of Armenia, which eventually resulted in violent clashes between the law enforcement bodies of Armenia and the opposition supporters in the evening of March 1 and early morning of March 2.
